Dude-a-betes:
A Men’s Health Initiative
Despite being the beneficiaries of a disproportionate level of research, treatments, and outreach, men all too often ignore symptoms and conditions until their health is beyond repair. This project was a way to access “why” this is the overwhelming experience for men, and seed ideas for unleashing healthier behaviors.
Why do so many men wait until it’s too late to deal with vital health issues?
Solution: Dudes & Diabetes is a platform built to explore the relationship between men and diabetes, and ultimately make a difference. At the time creation, I was working with Sanofi on their diabetes treatment platform, and simultaneously part of a professional development men’s group, the “Dudes of Disruption.” The conversations we were having in our monthly meetings, as well as what I saw in the community of people with T2 diabetes, served as co-catalysts for the journey.
The videos emerged from the observation that men who were both incredibly competent and yet didn’t do a great job of maintaining their health. Through video interviews that I shot and edited, shared content, and community engagement, the portal makes space for the impact of diabetes specifically on men, and seeks to promote health awareness, compassion, and dialogue during #Movember and beyond.
